CARSA
The bi-annual professional journal published by SAPSAC to disseminate research on matters of child abuse and maltreatment and to further a multidisciplinary approach by professionals to child abuse. See CARSA for further information.

SAPSAC Newsletter
The SAPSAC Newsletter is published quarterly and deals with at least one topic of interest in the child abuse arena. It also serves to keep SAPSAC members abreast with the activities of the Society. The following are some of the topics that have been discussed:
  • International cooperation by prosecutors for the effective prosecution of crimes against children
  • Department of Justice takes steps to address the handling of sexual offences
  • Child pornography on the Internet
  • The need for coordinated research on child abuse and neglect
  • Sex Rings
  • Strategy for multidisciplinary protocols and code of good practice in sexual offences

Annual SAPSAC Conference On Child Abuse
The annual SAPSAC Conference is a three day conference, held in Pretoria during May. Four such conferences have been held to date. One or two prominent international multidisciplinary guest speakers, as well as expert South African speakers from all of the relevant professions, are engaged each year. Previous guest speakers were:
  • In 2000, Frances Waters from the United States on the phenomenon of dissociation in cases of child sexual abuse.
  • In 2001, Laura Rogers, an American expert with many years of distinguished experience as prosecutor in child abuse cases
  • In 2002, Susan Samuel, a social worker and Jim Starks, a detective, who worked together as a team on child sexual abuse cases in Kentucky, USA, attaining a 95% conviction rate.
  • In 2003 the guest speaker was Prof Ray Bull, a forensic psychologist at the University of Portsmouth, England, on Good practice in child interviewing and Achieving best evidence from particularly vulnerable child victims.
  • In 2004 the guest speaker was Susan Kreston, Counsel for the National Center for Justice and the Rule of Law, USA. She addressed the conference on Computer facilitated child sexual abuse, Investigation and prosecution of child sexual and physical abuse and Prostituted trafficked and tourism targeted children.
  • In 2005 the guest speaker was Dr Larry Braunstein, a litigation lawyer from New York, USA. He addressed the conference on how to be a good witness and not to help the defense attorney in child abuse cases. He also discussed a step by step multi-disciplinary approach to child abuse litigation.
  • In 2006 the guest speaker was Dr & Supt Gérard Labuschagne, Investigative Psychology Unit, SAPS. He addressed the conference on the profile of sexual offenders.
Membership Fees
Membership fees consist of a joining fee of R50 and an annual fee of R400.00, payable annually by cheque/bank transfer or bi-annually by debit order. Details are obtainable from the Secretary at the above address.
